Years of Mesocosm Experiments
2022 to present
Description of Facility

The mesocosm Facility, which opened in summer 2022, enables researchers to mimic conditions found in Lake Erie while offering trade-offs between replicated, small-scale lab experiments and ecological realism. The Mesocosm Facility has 15 2,200-L tanks that can be filled with water from nearby Lake Erie, and the water can be filtered down to 1 µm, or the filters can be bypassed, allowing for the natural plankton community.

Controlled Parameters
  • The facility is open air and exposed to natural weather
  • Flow rate
  • Chillers to cool water or to minimize natural heating, but no heating
  • Water chemistry can be altered
Research Topics

Phytoplankton dynamics, fisheries management, cyanobacterial bloom control
