Partner Description
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) is a research institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts (KNAW), covering animal, plant and microbial ecology in terrestrial and aquatic environments. The institute has the luxury of an extensive tenured technical and administrative staff (55.1 fte) that provides support to senior researchers, junior researchers and PhD students. Peers have evaluated the quality of work of the department of Aquatic Ecology as outstanding; it remains an internationally pre-eminent group in limnology and freshwater ecology. Its combination of careful ecophysiological studies, replicated mesocosm experiments, intensive fieldwork, and theoretical and modeling efforts is comprehensive and virtually unmatched in other similarly sized groups internationally. The combination of strong experimental facilities in place along with sophisticated instrumentation, operated by highly skilled support staff has been rated excellent in the recent peer review.
Role and Commitment of key person(s)
Ellen van Donk (m) (f, PhD 1983 limnology) is professor and head of the department of Aquatic Ecology of the NIOO-KNAW. Her research focusses on how ecological mechanisms, evolutionary principles and abiotic factors govern the dynamics and structure of food webs in aquatic ecosystems. ISI WoS statistics: 178 papers, 5773 citations, h-Index 45 Project role: Task Leader WP6.3: Provision of TA to NIOO/KNAW: Limnotrons; Contributor to WP5.
Lisette de Senerpont Domis (f, PhD 2004, Mathematics and Natural Sciences) is head of the knowledge team AKWA, embedded in the Department of Aquatic Ecology of the NIOO. AKWA translates state-of the art scientific knowledge to practical solutions of water quality issues. ISI WoS statistics: 27 papers, 679 citations, h-Index 14. Project role: Leader WP4: NA3: Data collection, standardisation and sharing; Task Leader WP3.3 site documentation; Task Leader WP4.3 Data sharing; Co-leader WP 5.4: Engaging with education: Enhance European human capacitybuilding in mescocosm-based sciences; Contributor to all WPs.
